Crystals of Lore
In Ancient Egypt, the inhabitants of the Nile river basin used lapis lazuli, turquoise, carnelian, malachite, emerald, quartz, obsidian, garnet, rock crystal (quartz), and emeralds.
Lapis Lazuli was one of the favorites. It was widely used in the production of various objects, from animal figurines to scrolls; often, it was combined with colored glass and feathers for a better effect. Turquoise was popular as well; however, because of its high price, the Egyptians used faience (a type of glazed pottery), which mimicked it quite well. The formula for the creation of faience was to combine ground quartz powder with a blue-ish pigment. The blend was heated and molded into the shape of turquoise.
Jewelry and Other Uses
Jewelry was not seen as gender-specific and was worn by everyone. There weren’t any rules which reserved it for royalty or aristocracy; everyone, regardless of the social class they belonged to, could decorate their body. Earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets (bangles, armbands, and anklets) were widely used, and it’s worth mentioning that different pieces had different powers. Some could enhance health; others were used to ensure luck in the future.
The Egyptians also had amulets which were believed to stave off demons and protect the deceased. A particularly popular example of this is the heart scarab: an oval stone put on the left side of mourned person’s chest. The scarab’s function was to assure that the heart wouldn't separate from the body in the afterlife. If that were to happen, the god Anubis responsible for the judgment ceremony wouldn’t be able to weigh the deceased person’s deeds.
