Labradorite Metaphysical Properties
About Labradorite
With labradorite, it’s always love at first sight: once you catch a glimpse of its colorful flash, you won't easily forget it. It's a favorite stone of many, and for good reason: it’s a beautiful stone, containing a range of hues, from blue to yellow, to green - and sometimes even orange, purple, or pink. Find out what labradorite exactly is, which ancient tribes revered it, and what metaphysical and energetic properties it is associated with.
Physical Properties of Labradorite
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral. Its hardness is between 6 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Labradorite, like you can see in the photos or maybe know already, is one of the most beautiful stones, with its unforgettable, magical, multicolor iridescence and a unique, pearly glow.
It's vibrant flash - called labradorescence - is created when light travels down into the stone, through its layers, and is reflected by fractures. This is the same effect that you can see in rainbow moonstone: the blue flash is created by a similar phenomenon. In fact, rainbow moonstone and labradorite belong to the same family of minerals.
It’s worth mentioning that labradorite got its name after Labrador, a geographic region in Canada, where it was first extracted on Paul's Island, in the 1770s. Currently, labradorite is mined not only in Canada, but also in Norway, Finland (where it’s known as spectrolite), and in Madagascar, which is home to several other popular stones, as well. As a note, some people refer to very vibrant labradorite with a full spectrum of colors as spectrolite - even though that is not the intended use of the term.
History and Uses of Labradorite
The ancient native tribes of Canada believed that labradorite was fire transmuted into ice in the presence of northern lights. They believed that this breathtaking meteorological phenomenon was imprisoned in the stone during its creation process. There were other legends related to this stone, as well. One was about a brave warrior who tried to free the northern lights by destroying labradorite rocks with his spear. He partially succeeded, so now, the world has both the aurora lights and beautiful, color-filled labradorite.
In other shamanic beliefs, labradorite was perceived to be a perfect stone for mediums trying to access alternative realities and other, more advanced states of consciousness.
Energetic and Metaphysical Properties of Labradorite
Labradorite is a stone of both magic and protection. It can help you to enhance your intuition, increase synchronicity in your life, and help you to remember and embrace the ways in which YOU shine. It can also help you cut through the illusions to find the truth in situations and dispel negativity.
We already know that labradorite is related to the skies (through its lore surrounding the Northern Lights); however, it is, in fact, a stone of water. Interestingly, the Zodiac signs which will benefit the most from owning or wearing it are not the water signs, but Leo, Scorpio, and Sagittarius – the most courageous, self-confident signs in the horoscope. We'll explain why in the next section.
Labradorite is a precious gem for the three upper chakras: Vishuddha (the throat chakra), Ajna (the third eye chakra), and Sahasrara (the crown chakra). The connection to all three makes labradorite an excellent stone for gaining insight, connecting to the divine, and communication in general – both with the metaphysical and the physical realms.
Labradorite is said to enhance your psychic and clairvoyant abilities and help you see through the intricate patterns of life, to easily distinguish what's real and authentic, from what's false and unnecessary. Because of this, it might prove beneficial to the signs Leo, Scorpio, and Sagittarius, who are always bravely pushing forward in their lives, trying to get the most out of every situation. Don't let obstacles divert you from the right path and your true calling – surround yourself with labradorite to stay the course.
Sometimes, our authentic voice might be hijacked by anxieties, resulting from trauma experienced at some point in our lives. At that time, it could feel very challenging to trust your intuition. However, labradorite may help you to sort through this issue. With this stone, you won't need to worry about being misled: if you're avoiding the divine out of fear, labradorite can help you remember that it's only your imagination speaking, and bring you back to who you really are. It will guide you around the spiritual world, and prevent you from getting lost.
If you're starting a meditation practice or going on a dream journey for the first time, try putting a piece of labradorite in your pocket, or wearing labradorite jewelry: it will boost your faith in the consciousness ruling this universe and facilitate connection attempts.
Labradorite is said to have a myriad of other energetic benefits, as well. If you need new ideas, or are in the midst of a creative project, but are running out of inspiration, put labradorite in your working space. It is said to help boost your brain activity and enhance your sight, uncovering new ways of solving problems, and giving you perseverance that you perhaps lack at the moment.
Labradorite is also said to boost intuition and support the third eye chakra, as well as helping you to see the magic all around you in life. It is also known as a stone of change and transformation.
